Understanding the Digital SAT

With the College Board’s introduction of the digital SAT, they have made the biggest change to the test in eight years. With the introduction of an online, adaptive test, people wonder what the changes are and how they will affect students.

How does the digital exam work? 

The biggest change in the digital SAT is just that--it’s digital. This online test can be taken on their personal computer or a school-provided computer. Students will need to download the Bluebook app to access the exam. It is best that students download the app in advance and take a few practice exams with it to familiarize themselves with both the app and the exam. 

What does the scoring look like?

While the test is still scored on the 1600-point scale, it is now an adaptive test which means that students experience a more dynamic test. The first section of the test is the same for each student and will evaluate their performance to filter them into their second section. A student’s results from the first section will lead them to either a higher or lower second module. Their ultimate score depends on which module they were placed into. 

This change to a digital test allows for new tools to be used to enhance the test-taking experience. Students can highlight, bookmark, and annotate in the test. In addition, they have access to Desmos, a powerful online calculator that can be used in exciting new ways to improve students’ accuracy and process in the math section. 

Is the content the same?

The biggest change to the exam content is in the reading and writing section. The reading and writing used to be two separate sections with lengthy passages, but now they have been combined into one unified section with passages averaging about 100 words. In addition to testing students on grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary in context, students will answer questions on craft and structure, and understanding ideas.

The math section is similar to the old SAT but the inclusion of the Desmos online calculator adds a new element and it is essential that students learn which questions are best answered using this tool. Using the Desmos calculator can help students greatly improve their scoring potential.

What kind of resources are there to help students prepare?

Since it is a new test there aren’t as many practice resources available as with the old format, however, an experienced test prep coach can help students find and utilize the most helpful tools available. 

The digital SAT presents a new frontier in standardized testing, bringing opportunities and challenges. However, with the right resources, preparation, and understanding, students can confidently navigate this unfamiliar testing landscape.
